Powders

Powder metallurgy:
source of 80% of
METALOR products

What motivated us to integrate powder metallurgy into its process? Mainly the need to create pseudo-alloys from a mixture of metals (Ag and Cu), non-miscible oxides, and refractory materials.

All three plants of the Metalor Electrotechnics Business Group are outfitted with powder units. Our powders are produced by simple mixing, mechanical/thermal granulation, or chemically.

The choice of powder process depends on the desired mechanical, electrical, and thermal characteristics of the final product. Our powders are used in compaction or extrusion processes to produce semi-finished or finished products (billets, strips, and wires). Our powders are developed internally to meet our exacting needs.

Our pseudo-alloys

40% of our powders are oxide-based

The exceptional properties of our AgSnO2 and AgZnO materials are achieved by adding dopants during the manufacturing process. These properties include electrical endurance (millions of cycles), non-stick surfaces, or low contact resistance, all thoroughly tested in the electrical test laboratory in our Courville plant in France. These pseudo alloys are mainly used in contactors, relays, and switches (low voltage).

50% of our powders are based on refractory materials

AgC, AgW, AgCW, AgNi, AgCNi, CuW, CuCr are excellent alloys in short circuit and therefore used in low voltage circuit breakers (MCB, MCCB, ELB, ACB, etc…), in medium voltage applications (VI, VCB, etc..), and also high voltage applications.

The remaining 10% of our powders have been developed for specific applications.

AgFeRe or AgFe2O3ZrO2 are pseudo alloys that can take the place of AgNi. Please contact the Metalor R&D teams with any specific requests you may have.
